B-parameters of the complete set of matrix elements of (Delta B = 2) operators from the lattice

We compute on the lattice the ``bag'' parameters of the five (Delta B = 2) operators of the supersymmetric basis, by combining their values determined in full QCD and in the static limit of HQET. The extrapolation of the QCD results from the accessible heavy-light meson masses to the B-meson mass is constrained by the static result. The matching of the corresponding results in HQET and in QCD is for the first time made at NLO accuracy in the MSbar(NDR) renormalization scheme. All results are obtained in the quenched approximation.Comment: 27 pages (5 figures

Context: The Rossiter-McLaughlin (RM) effect, a rotational effect in eclipsing systems, provides unique insight into the relative orientation of stellar spin axes and orbital axes of eclipsing binary systems. Aims: Our aim is to develop a robust method to analyze the RM effect in an eclipsing system with two nearly equally bright components. This gives access to the orientation of the stellar rotation axes and may shed light on questions of binary formation and evolution. Methods: High-resolution spectra have been obtained both out of eclipse and during the primary and secondary eclipses in the V1143Cyg system, using the high-resolution Hamilton Echelle Spectrograph at the Lick Observatory. The Rossiter-McLaughlin effect is analyzed in two ways: (1) by measuring the shift of the line center of gravity during different phases of the eclipses and (2) by analysis of the line shape change of the rotational broadening function during eclipses. Results: The projected axes of both stars are aligned with the orbital spin within the observational uncertainties, with the angle of the primary rotation axis beta_p=0.3+-1.5 deg, and the angle of the secondary rotation axis beta_s=-1.2+-1.6 deg, thereby showing that the remaining difference between the theoretical and observed apsidal motion for this system is not due to a misalignment of the stellar rotation axes. Both methods utilized in this paper work very well, even at times when the broadening profiles of the two stars overlap.[abridged]Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 11 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables ; a typo in the abstract has been correcte

Optimal goodness–of–fit procedures for multistate models are new. Drawing a parallel with the corresponding single–state procedures, we present their singularities and show how the overall test can be decomposed into interpretable components. All theoretical developments are illustrated with an application to the now classical study of movements of Canada geese between wintering sites. Through this application, we exemplify how the interpretable components give insight into the data, leading eventually to the choice of an appropriate general model but also sometimes to the invalidation of the multistate models as a whole. The method for computing a corrective overdispersion factor is then mentioned. We also take the opportunity to try to demystify some statistical notions like that of Minimal Sufficient Statistics by introducing them intuitively. We conclude that these tests should be considered an important part of the analysis itself, contributing in ways that the parametric modelling cannot always do to the understanding of the data.

The Distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud from the Eclipsing Binary HV2274

The distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is crucial for the calibration of the Cosmic Distance Scale. We derive a distance to the LMC based on an analysis of ground-based photometry and HST-based spectroscopy and spectrophotometry of the LMC eclipsing binary system HV2274. Analysis of the optical light curve and HST/GHRS radial velocity curve provides the masses and radii of the binary components. Analysis of the HST/FOS UV/optical spectrophotometry provides the temperatures of the component stars and the interstellar extinction of the system. When combined, these data yield a distance to the binary system. After correcting for the location of HV2274 with respect to the center of the LMC, we find d(LMC) = 45.7 +/- 1.6 kpc or DM(LMC) = 18.30 +/- 0.07 mag. This result, which is immune to the metallicity-induced zero point uncertainties that have plagued other techniques, lends strong support to the ``short'' LMC distance scale as derived from a number of independent methods.Comment: 6 pages, including 2 pages of figures. Newly available optical (B and V) photometry has revealed -- and allowed the elimination of -- a systematic error in the previously reported determination of E(B-V) for HV2274. The new result is E(B-V) = 0.12 mag (as compared to the value of 0.083 reported in the original submission) and produces a DECREASE in the distance modulus of HV2274 by 0.12 mag. Decision Analysis Linguistic Framework

Everyday human beings are faced with situations they should choose among different alternatives by means of reasoning and mental processes when solving a problem. Many of these decision problems are under uncertain environments including vague, imprecise and subjective information that is usually modeled by linguistic information due to the use of natural language and its relation to mental reasoning processes of the experts when expressing their judgments. In a decision process multiple criteria can be evaluated which involving multiple experts with different degrees of knowledge. Such process can be modeled by using Multi-granular Linguistic Information (MGLI) and Computing with Words (CW) processes to solve the related decision problems. Different methodologies and approaches have been proposed to accomplish this process in an accurate and interpretable way. In this paper we propose a useful Decision Analysis Framework to manage this kind of problems by using the Extended Linguistic Hierarchy (ELH), 2-tuples linguistic representation model and its computational method. The developed Framework has many advantages when dealing with a complex problem in a simple way and its capability of having easy and useful reasonably results.

Finalmente, se abordan sus implicaciones de cara al tipo de formación específicaThe purpose of this study was to assess Primary Education Physical Education (PE) teachers’ perspectives of the process of incorporating the Basic Competences (BBCC) into the curriculum of the Principality of Asturias. A total of 151 PE teachers (46.6% of the whole population) answered an ad hoc questionnaire of 12 items using a 6-point Likert scale. The results showed a full incorporation of the BBCC in the PE program. However, the degree of development in practice turned out to be lower. Being female, young, and having a high-level and specific training emerged as differentiating factors. Cross-cutting skills were valued more than those related to the specific curricular areas. The depth of change undertaken by the teachers compared to the required changed are discussed. Finally, implications to address specific training are also introduce

Los resultados indicaron mejoras significativas en las metas de evitación del rendimiento, metas de amistad, necesidades psicológicas básicas y subescalas de deportividad en ambos grupos de Educación DeportivaThe goal of the present project was to compare the effects of three different instructional models: (Traditional, Sport Education and Sport Education with Self-Made Materials) on physical education students' motivation and sportsmanship. A quasi-experimental design with three levels of treatment was used. Pretest and posttest scores on achievement goals, friendship, psychological needs and sportsmanship were obtained after the application of a learning unit of ultimate in a school in the northern part of Spain. A total of 295 secondary school students, ages 12-17, agreed to participate. Results showed significant increases in performance-avoidance goals, friendship goals, basic psychological needs and sportsmanship in both Sport Education groups. Sport Education seems to offer more advantages than the traditional teaching method to develop adolescents achievement and social goals, as well as sportsmanship, in physical educatio

Partial Differential Equation-Constrained Diffeomorphic Registration from Sum of Squared Differences to Normalized Cross-Correlation, Normalized Gradient Fields, and Mutual Information: A Unifying Framework; 35632143

This work proposes a unifying framework for extending PDE-constrained Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping (PDE-LDDMM) with the sum of squared differences (SSD) to PDE-LDDMM with different image similarity metrics. We focused on the two best-performing variants of PDE-LDDMM with the spatial and band-limited parameterizations of diffeomorphisms. We derived the equations for gradient-descent and Gauss-Newton-Krylov (GNK) optimization with Normalized Cross-Correlation (NCC), its local version (lNCC), Normalized Gradient Fields (NGFs), and Mutual Information (MI). PDE-LDDMM with GNK was successfully implemented for NCC and lNCC, substantially improving the registration results of SSD. For these metrics, GNK optimization outperformed gradient-descent. However, for NGFs, GNK optimization was not able to overpass the performance of gradient-descent. For MI, GNK optimization involved the product of huge dense matrices, requesting an unaffordable memory load. The extensive evaluation reported the band-limited version of PDE-LDDMM based on the deformation state equation with NCC and lNCC image similarities among the best performing PDE-LDDMM methods. In comparison with benchmark deep learning-based methods, our proposal reached or surpassed the accuracy of the best-performing models. In NIREP16, several configurations of PDE-LDDMM outperformed ANTS-lNCC, the best benchmark method. Although NGFs and MI usually underperformed the other metrics in our evaluation, these metrics showed potentially competitive results in a multimodal deformable experiment. We believe that our proposed image similarity extension over PDE-LDDMM will promote the use of physically meaningful diffeomorphisms in a wide variety of clinical applications depending on deformable image registration

The goal of this study was to examine the effects of two instructional approaches, Sport Education and Direct Instruction, in a large sample of Spanish secondary education students’ psychological response. 217 (113 males, 104 females) students (12-17 years) from one urban, coeducational high school (grades 8-11th) agreed to participate. On each grade, all subjects were randomly distributed in two study groups: the experimental group experienced Sport Education, while the comparison group experienced Direct Instruction. Several subscales extracted from different questionnaires (PLOC, BPNES, IMI, SGS-PE, PMCSQ-2) were used to measure the effects of the intervention program. All data was analyzed using the SPSS 19.0 statistical program. Results showed that the Sport Education group significantly improved intrinsic motivation, autonomy, competence, interest, boredom, social responsibility, social relationship and cooperative learning. The Direct Instruction group showed significant gains only in autonomy, social responsibility and cooperative learning. Sport Education can significantly promote adaptive psychological responses in adolescents.
